CLIMATE.PARK.CHANGE
Intermountain West, United States
Anna Cawrse, Sasaki with the National Recreation and Park Association
Climate.park.change is a web-based tool designed to identify climatic threats and suggest strategies to adapt. Aimed at regional park managers, the tool focuses on large regional parklands in the Intermountain West region. The designers and researchers found both an opportunity and a gap in regional parks to deploy landscape-based systems to adapt and mitigate climate stresses. Aimed at park managers, the platform includes case studies, mapping, data sources, and strategies for specific threats to the region. The strategies are broad and not site-specific, with suggestions for different design typologies and practices that can be employed according to the threat. The three case studies offer site specific suggestions to begin to visualize strategies in action. For example, West Bar Val Wood Park in Denver is focused on heat island effect and inland flooding. Glendale Water Park Redevelopment in Salt Lake City looks at fluctuating river levels, drought and pollution. Lastly, Bear Meadows Park in Evanston, Wyoming addresses extreme wind conditions and landscape diversification. Through its case studies and strategies, climate.park.change prioritizes interventions that are believed to be the most replicable across many different types of park and recreation systems.
